Modernizing Design and Manufacturing Processes: Mahindra and Mahindra’s Successful Upgrade to Teamcenter 14.3

Chennai, India – In an effort to modernize their design and manufacturing processes, Mahindra and Mahindra embarked on a project to upgrade over 150 customized modules from Teamcenter 11.3 to Teamcenter 14.3. Facing challenges such as outdated technical documentation and an incompatible legacy Teamcenter version, the company sought to streamline their systems across Functional Development (FD), Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE), and Manufacturing Tool and Die (MTWD) business units.

Challenges

Over the years, customer sites have been developed with various custom RAC solutions involving multiple stakeholders, for which required technical and functional documents were either unavailable or not up to date. Additionally, they were using an outdated Teamcenter version that could not support Creo, NX, and other compatible CAD applications in the server configuration.

Solution

The project team put significant effort into analyzing the existing solutions and preparing the necessary records and documentation for the planned execution of upgrading 150+ custom modules. The solution involved replacing deprecated APIs in all customization binaries (ITK, SOA, RAC) across all business units with appropriate APIs for the current Teamcenter version. The team also standardized code and configurations by updating legacy methodologies to the latest contemporary technologies.

Implementation

The implementation was well-planned, with critical modules sorted and prioritized to kickstart development activities according to schedule. The team framed Teamcenter upgrade guidelines to manage a 10+ member team for effective and quality deliverables. Server-side and client-side customizations/configurations were completed in the newly implemented Single Sign-On (SSO) and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) enabled Teamcenter 14.3 environment. The team also supported the client in upgrading from the Cordys Web framework to the Maven framework to facilitate Teamcenter integration. Throughout the process, existing Teamcenter 11.3 solutions were maintained, and delta changes were incorporated into the live Teamcenter 14.3 environment.

Our primary objective was to upgrade Teamcenter from version 11.3 to 14.3 for one of our most important clients. This upgrade included updating associated CAD applications and custom solutions developed within the system. The goal was to enhance system flexibility, improve customization capabilities, and ensure long-term support from Siemens, the product owner.

Background

Our client, a leading player in their industry, relied heavily on Teamcenter 11.3 for their product lifecycle management (PLM) processes. However, the older version posed several challenges:


Lack of Flexibility: The existing system was rigid, limiting the client’s ability to adapt and extend solutions.

Luminous Implements Teamcenter Solution to Enhance Innovation and Collaboration

Introduction

Luminous has decided to establish a PLM setup for their organization. As part of this initiative, Luminous aims to implement the Teamcenter Solution to leverage industry best practices.

Client Background

Luminous is known for its focus on innovation and technology. The company invests in research and development to continuously improve its product offerings and stay ahead of market trends. It has introduced several innovative products, such as high-efficiency inverters, lithium-ion batteries, and smart power management systems.

Challenges

Since the company's stakeholders were unfamiliar with the PDM system, explaining Teamcenter and collecting the right input for development was challenging. The project kicked off as per the plan, but an additional two weeks were allocated to understand their current processes and methodologies. Despite this, the solution was developed and delivered on time, with enhancements and feedback from UAT incorporated before the production move.

Solution

The most challenging part of the solution was the collaboration between the ECAD and MCAD teams. Internal solution challenges included working with Creo and Altium, which had not been used before inside TI. An SOP for legacy data migration was also developed.

Implementation

The project faced hurdles such as a short deadline, limited resources, and reduced system availability. Thanks to the timely support from the Luminous IT, ECAD, and MCAD teams, we accessed their systems for almost 14 hours per day without network disruptions.

- The introduction of Teamcenter helped Luminous maintain design data in a centralized repository with high reusability.
